Nylon 12 Tough PA12 Tough · SLS powder

PA12 Tough is a more ductile PA12 with 25% elongation at break and almost double the Izod impact strength, and it warps less on wide parts.
Powder
Blasted part

Nylon 12 Tough is a PA12 grade formulated for ductility. Elongation at break rises to 25% in X/Y and 15% in Z, and notched Izod impact reaches 60 J/m, almost double that of standard PA12 (32 J/m). In return the part is softer, with a modulus of 1450 MPa and 42 MPa tensile strength.

Formlabs recommends it for consistent dimensional accuracy across the whole build chamber and for low warpage on large sections. We use it for flat plates, long frames and bulky parts, which tend to curl in standard PA12.

It performs worse than PA12 at high temperature. Under a 1.8 MPa load it deforms from 46 °C, whereas PA12 holds up to 87 °C. Use it for clips and snap fits, and avoid it for brackets that sit under load in heat. It prints only on the Fuse 1+ 30W.

Clear protective coat. It seals the pores of the surface, so the part is easier to clean and slightly glossy.

Good for

  • Clips and snap fits that are assembled and taken apart repeatedly
  • Flat plates and long frames, where standard PA12 can curl
  • Covers and housings that have to survive a drop
  • Fixtures that take light knocks during handling

Limitations

  • HDT is 46 °C at 1.8 MPa, so it is not suitable for loaded parts that sit in heat.
  • It is less stiff than PA12 (1450 against 1850 MPa), and thin walls flex noticeably.
  • It prints only on the Fuse 1+ 30W, so the part can be at most 165 × 165 × 300 mm.

Surface finishing

  • Glass bead blasting in the Fuse Blast (standard)
  • Heat-set brass threaded inserts (on request)

GuideHow to choose between PA12 and PA11 for SLS parts

Questions about PA12 Tough

When should I choose PA12 Tough instead of PA11?

Both are ductile. PA11 has higher elongation (40% against 25%) and higher Izod impact (71 against 60 J/m), but it reproduces fine detail less well. PA12 Tough keeps detail and the flatness of wide parts better. For a wide, flat part choose PA12 Tough, and for a part that has to bend a lot, choose PA11.

Can I use PA12 Tough for parts that run hot?

Only if the part is not under load. HDT is 161 °C at 0.45 MPa but drops to 46 °C at 1.8 MPa. A loaded bracket next to a heat source will deform, so in that case use PA12 GF (113 °C at 1.8 MPa).

Why can't it be printed on the Fuse X1?

Formlabs has validated the powder only for the Fuse 1+ 30W and lists it as incompatible with the Fuse X1. For that reason, parts are limited to 165 × 165 × 300 mm.
