Nylon 12 GF PA12 GF · SLS powder

PA12 GF is glass-filled, so it is stiffer and more stable in heat than PA12, but also more brittle.
Powder
Blasted part

Nylon 12 GF is glass-filled PA12. The glass increases stiffness, so the tensile modulus rises to 2800 MPa, against 1850 MPa for PA12. The heat deflection temperature under a 1.8 MPa load reaches 113 °C, against 87 °C.

In return the material is more brittle. Elongation at break drops to 4% in X/Y and 3% in Z, and tensile strength drops to 38 MPa. When overloaded, the part breaks without deforming first, so do not design clips or snap fits in PA12 GF.

Choose PA12 GF for fixtures that stay under load for long periods, brackets next to heat sources and housings that have to stay straight. In the Formlabs comparison table it has the same dimensional accuracy as PA12, the best in the range. We print it on the Fuse 1+ 30W, and on the Fuse X1 it is announced for June 2027.

Clear protective coat. It seals the pores of the surface, so the part is easier to clean and slightly glossy.

Good for

  • Fixtures and jigs that stay under load for hours or days
  • Brackets and mounts next to motors, ovens or lamps
  • Housings that have to stay straight when heated
  • Inspection gauges that must not deform
  • Parts that replace machined components in rigid plastic

Limitations

  • It is brittle, with 4% elongation at break in X/Y and 3% in Z, so it is not suitable for clips or hinges.
  • Its tensile strength is lower than that of PA12 (38 against 50 MPa).
  • The refresh rate is 50%, which means each build uses more fresh powder and the material cost is higher than for PA12.
  • For now it prints only on the Fuse 1+ 30W, so the part can be at most 165 × 165 × 300 mm.

Surface finishing

  • Glass bead blasting in the Fuse Blast (standard)
  • Heat-set brass threaded inserts (on request)

GuideHow to choose between PA12 and PA11 for SLS parts

Questions about PA12 GF

Should I use PA12 GF or PA11 CF for a stiff part?

PA11 CF is stiffer (up to 5300 MPa on the X axis, against 2800 MPa) and much tougher (Izod 74 against 36 J/m), but its properties depend on orientation and it prints only in nitrogen. PA12 GF has more uniform properties in all directions and better dimensional accuracy. For a fixture plate under static load we recommend PA12 GF, and for an arm that also takes impacts, PA11 CF.

What temperature can PA12 GF withstand?

HDT is 170 °C at 0.45 MPa and 113 °C at 1.8 MPa (ASTM D648). For a loaded part, take 113 °C as the reference and leave a margin.

Can I have threads in PA12 GF?

Small printed threads break easily, because the material is brittle. For screws that are tightened often, use heat-set metal inserts or tap printed holes made at the tap drill diameter.
