Nylon 11 CF PA11 CF · SLS powder

Black PA11 filled with carbon fibre is the stiffest and most heat-resistant material in the range, and its properties depend on how the part is oriented.
Powder
Blasted part

Nylon 11 CF combines the ductile PA11 base with carbon fibre. On the X axis the part reaches 69 MPa tensile strength and a modulus of 5300 MPa, almost 3 times the stiffness of PA12. Under a 1.8 MPa load the heat deflection temperature is 178 °C, the highest of the Formlabs powders.

The properties differ a lot between axes. In tension the part has 69 MPa on X, 52 MPa on Y and 38 MPa on Z. When you send us the part, tell us which direction the main load acts in, so we can orient it in the chamber with the load along X.

Unlike PA12 GF, PA11 CF is not brittle. Izod impact is 74 J/m and elongation at break is 9–15% in the XY plane. Choose PA11 CF for drone arms, brackets that replace lightly loaded metal parts and tools that take impacts. It prints only on the Fuse 1+ 30W and always in nitrogen, and Formlabs does not offer it for the Fuse X1.

Clear protective coat. It seals the pores of the surface, so the part is easier to clean and slightly glossy.

Good for

  • Arms, plates and brackets for drones and robots
  • Brackets that replace lightly loaded metal parts
  • Fixtures and tools that take impacts
  • Mounts next to heat sources, with an HDT of 178 °C at 1.8 MPa
  • Black end-use parts that need no dyeing

Limitations

  • The properties differ between axes, and on Z the tensile strength drops to 38 MPa and the modulus to 1600 MPa.
  • It prints only on the Fuse 1+ 30W, in nitrogen, so the part can be at most 165 × 165 × 300 mm.
  • Fine details come out less well than in PA12.

Surface finishing

  • Glass bead blasting in the Fuse Blast (standard)
  • Heat-set brass threaded inserts (on request)

Questions about PA11 CF

Can PA11 CF replace an aluminium part?

For lightly loaded brackets and mounts it can, provided you make the walls thicker. Aluminium has a modulus of about 70 GPa, and PA11 CF has 5.3 GPa on its best axis. For heavily loaded structural parts, stay with metal.

Why does part orientation matter?

On the X axis the part has 69 MPa tensile strength and a modulus of 5300 MPa, and on Z only 38 MPa and 1600 MPa. Depending on how we place it in the chamber, the stiffness of the same part can differ by a factor of 3, so tell us the direction of the main load.

Can PA11 CF handle engine bay temperatures?

It handles heat best of all our materials, with an HDT of 188 °C at 0.45 MPa and 178 °C at 1.8 MPa (ASTM D648). It is the right choice for a bracket next to an engine, but check the actual working temperature and the fluids the part comes into contact with.
